POSITION

We have a full-time position of Veterinary Nurse in Cairns QLD, 4870.

SKILL LEVEL

The business requires the following qualifications and experience for the Veterinary Nurses position:

  • Hold at least an AQF (or equivalent) Certificate IV; and
  • Have at least 2 years’ experience (minimum of 35 hours per week).

RESPONSIBILITIES OVERVIEW

The Emergency Veterinary Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive care to animals under treatment in a fast-paced, critical care environment. This role involves supporting veterinarians during examinations and surgeries, ensuring the cleanliness and sterility of the veterinary facility, and managing the recovery and well-being of animals’ post-surgery.

The Veterinary Nurse also plays a key role in client communication, offering guidance and emotional support to pet owners while maintaining accurate medical records and participating in ongoing training and emergency drills.

REPORTS TO

You will be required to report to the Nurse Manager & RSO and the Practice Manager.

POSITION DUTIES

You will need to undertake the following duties:

  • Assist veterinarians during examinations and surgical procedures, including the preparation and handling of instruments and administering anaesthesia and holding the animals to ensure procedures can be completed smoothly and safely.
  • Monitor animals during recovery, administer medications, and ensure their comfort and safety.
  • Perform diagnostic tests and provide necessary post-operative care.
  • Maintain a clean, sterile environment by cleaning and sterilising equipment, examination tables, and surgical areas.
  • Manage stock control and maintain accurate records of treatments and supplies.
  • Provide clear and compassionate communication with pet owners regarding their pets’ treatment and care plans.
  • Offer animal care advice and contribute to the preparation and delivery of educational programs.
  • Participate in regular training sessions and emergency procedure drills to ensure preparedness for critical situations.
  • Support general clinic operations by handling clerical tasks, including reception duties and payment processing when needed.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Experience in emergency and critical care is preferred but not essential.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure environment and handle stressful situations calmly.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in using veterinary practice management software.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and learning.

SALARY

The successful applicant will receive a salary from $75,000 to $85,000 based on qualification and experience.
