GIS Foundation Specialist – Defence / Geospatial Intelligence

Azooa is preparing a response for an upcoming Federal Government Defence geospatial engagement and is seeking a suitably qualified GIS Foundation Specialist – Level 2 (Practitioner).

This is a hands-on GIS production opportunity for an experienced geospatial practitioner with strong capability across geospatial data production, feature extraction, quality assurance, cartographic production, imagery and structured spatial datasets.

The successful contractor will contribute to the production, maintenance and quality assurance of authoritative Foundation Geospatial data and products supporting Defence strategic, operational and tactical requirements.

About the Role

The role will operate within a structured and governed Enterprise GIS environment and contribute to the production and sustainment of trusted geospatial information.

You will work with a range of geospatial datasets, imagery and mapping technologies to produce accurate spatial data, cartographic outputs and related products.

The position is suited to someone who enjoys technically detailed, hands-on GIS work and can confidently operate within established standards, schemas, production workflows and quality frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Perform geospatial data production, capture, editing and maintenance.
  • Undertake 2D and 3D feature extraction.
  • Use professional GIS and geospatial production tools including ArcGIS, SOCET GXP or equivalent platforms.
  • Create, manipulate and maintain spatial datasets.
  • Work with geospatial imagery, mapping information and related source data.
  • Interpret and analyse geographic information within GIS environments.
  • Work with structured and potentially complex geospatial data schemas and specifications.
  • Apply established production standards and technical specifications.
  • Conduct spatial data quality assurance and validation.
  • Ensure geospatial datasets are accurate, complete and consistent.
  • Identify and resolve routine geospatial data-quality issues.
  • Produce cartographic products and other geospatial outputs to defined technical, operational and presentation requirements.
  • Support the maintenance of Foundation Geospatial datasets within enterprise systems.
  • Follow established geospatial production workflows, procedures and standards.
  • Prepare or contribute to quality reports and procedural documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with GIS specialists, technical teams and relevant stakeholders.
  • Deliver accurate outputs within agreed quality and timeframe requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of geospatial production workflows.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving GIS and geospatial technologies.

The environment may also involve photogrammetry, geomatics, stereo imagery and geospatial imaging workflows, making experience in these areas particularly valuable.

Essential Skills & Experience

We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Professional experience in GIS data production, capture, editing and maintenance.
  • Practical experience undertaking geospatial data quality assurance and validation.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS, SOCET GXP or comparable GIS technologies.
  • Experience with 2D and/or 3D feature extraction.
  • Experience working with structured geospatial schemas and specifications.
  • Strong understanding of spatial-data accuracy, completeness and consistency.
  • Ability to produce cartographic and geospatial outputs to defined standards.
  • Strong analytical capability and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively under general direction.
  • Ability to follow established technical procedures and workflows.
  • Strong communication and teamwork capability.
  • Ability to deliver accurate outputs within agreed timelines.

Qualifications

A relevant vocational or tertiary qualification is desirable in areas such as:

  • Geographic Information Systems

  • Or a closely related discipline

Equivalent professional experience may also be considered.

Security Clearance

Applicants must either:

  • Hold a current Top Secret Positive Vetting – TSPV security clearance, or
  • Have held TSPV within the previous 12 months which has subsequently been downgraded.

The successful candidate will also need to satisfy applicable Defence Intelligence suitability requirements prior to commencement and maintain the required security status throughout the engagement.

Applicants who do not meet the TSPV requirement are unlikely to be suitable for this particular opportunity.

Engagement Details

Position: GIS Foundation Specialist – Level 2 (Practitioner)

Location: Bendigo, VIC – primarily onsite within a Commonwealth environment

Estimated commencement: October 2026

Initial engagement: Approximately 12 months

Extension options: 2 x 12 months, subject to Commonwealth discretion

Working arrangements: Approximately 8 hours per working day

Travel: Occasional domestic travel may be required

Relevant Government-furnished workstation and ICT equipment are expected to be provided for performance of the engagement.

Rate

Up to $150.58/hour including super

$1,204.64 per 8-hour day including super

Candidates with strong alignment across TSPV clearance, Defence/Intelligence experience, SOCET GXP, geospatial production, imagery or photogrammetry are strongly encouraged to apply.
