Location: Brisbane on site

The Role

Our client is midway through a multi-year Data & Analytics uplift programme and are looking for a Data Scientist to help change how claims management decisions are supported.

You'll combine structured claims data with unstructured claim documentation to build analytical models, ML solutions and decision-support tools. Your work will help claims officers make more consistent, evidence-based decisions across a large and diverse insurance portfolio.

What you'll be doing

  • Identifying patterns and trends across claims and uncovering emerging risks
  • Predicting claim outcomes, claim duration, legal costs and reserve adequacy
  • Flagging complex, high-risk or high-cost claims earlier
  • Applying statistical, ML and NLP techniques to deliver tangible business value
  • Working closely with claims specialists, data professionals and business leaders
  • Contributing to a programme that includes GenAI (RAG, embeddings, document intelligence) and lays the foundation for graph and vector-based architectures

What you'll bring

Essential

  • Demonstrated experience applying machine learning to large, complex datasets to deliver measurable business outcomes
  • Strong statistical and predictive modelling skills: classification and regression, time-series analysis, clustering and segmentation, anomaly detection, and model evaluation and validation
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Databricks, Python and SQL
  • Experience delivering AI/ML solutions through CI/CD processes
  • Experience monitoring the cost, latency and reliability of AI/ML features and optimising solutions in production

Desirable

  • NLP and text analytics experience, including topic modelling, text classification and large-scale unstructured data analysis
  • Experience in a public sector, insurance or other highly regulated environment
  • A university degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics or a related field

Why this role

  • Meaningful work with real impact on how claims are managed across Queensland Government agencies
  • A chance to shape a data and AI programme as it moves into advanced analytics and GenAI
  • A short, focused engagement with clear deliverables
