Legal Counsel / Senior Legal Counsel - Project Delivery
Sigma Executive
The Company
Our client is a highly regarded global construction and infrastructure contractor with an established international reputation for delivering complex, landmark projects across transport, civil infrastructure, rail and major construction.
With a strong international presence and extensive experience delivering large-scale infrastructure projects, the business operates across a variety of contractual delivery models, including D&C, EPC, PPP, Alliance and O&M arrangements.
Following the recent award of a significant transport infrastructure and integrated precinct development project in Sydney, the business is continuing to expand its Australian operations and strengthen its internal legal capabilities.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Legal Counsel to support the delivery of this major project, working closely with the legal, commercial and project delivery teams.
The Role
Reporting to the Australian Legal Counsel and working closely with senior commercial and project delivery stakeholders, you will provide practical, commercially focused legal advice throughout the construction and delivery phases of a landmark Sydney infrastructure project.
This is a highly visible, hands-on opportunity for a construction lawyer looking to work closer to the operational side of major projects, with direct involvement in contractual negotiations, procurement, risk management and project delivery.
You will play an important role in supporting the commercial team, helping navigate complex contractual issues and providing pragmatic legal solutions that contribute to successful project outcomes.
Key responsibilities will include
- Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a broad range of construction, infrastructure and commercial contracts, including D&C agreements, subcontracts, supply and consultancy agreements.
- Working closely with project directors, commercial managers and contract administrators on procurement, contract administration, variations, claims and project delivery matters.
- Advising on contractual risk allocation, commercial exposure, liabilities, indemnities and strategies to mitigate project risks.
- Supporting the negotiation and management of subcontractor, supplier and professional services agreements.
- Providing commercially focused advice on contractual disputes, extensions of time, claims and other issues arising throughout the construction lifecycle.
- Advising on relevant construction legislation, regulatory requirements and contractual compliance.
- Partnering with senior operational and commercial stakeholders to support effective decision-making and successful project delivery.
- Assisting with broader legal and commercial matters across the Australian business as required.
The Candidate
The successful candidate will be a commercially minded construction and infrastructure lawyer with approximately 5–12 years' post-qualification experience, gained within a leading law firm, major construction contractor, infrastructure business or comparable in-house legal environment.
You will have a strong foundation in front-end construction law, complemented by an understanding of major project delivery and the ability to provide practical, solutions-oriented legal advice.
In addition, you will demonstrate:
- Strong experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating construction and commercial agreements.
- Sound knowledge of D&C contracting, infrastructure procurement, subcontracting and contractual risk allocation.
- Exposure to major construction, civil infrastructure, rail or transport projects.
- An understanding of contract administration, variations, claims and project delivery risks.
- The ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively with legal, commercial and operational teams.
- Strong communication, drafting and negotiation skills, with the confidence to engage directly with senior stakeholders.
- A pragmatic, commercially focused approach and the ability to balance legal risk with operational objectives.
Previous experience working within a major contractor or advising commercial teams on significant infrastructure projects will be highly regarded.
This is an excellent opportunity for a construction lawyer looking to transition in-house or an existing Legal Counsel seeking greater exposure to the delivery of complex, nationally significant infrastructure projects.
