Our team is looking for a highly motivated, quantitative candidate for the PhD scholarship below:

Advancing stock assessment models for the Southern Rock Lobster fishery in South Australia

The Southern Rock Lobster in South Australia is managed through a harvest strategy that strongly relies on biological performance indicators such as harvest rate, total biomass, and egg production. These indicators are typically derived from stock assessment models developed over the past 20 years. However, these likelihood-based integrated population models are often bespoke, with specific methodologies that complicate their comparison with approaches developed elsewhere. Furthermore, recent advances in fisheries modelling and climate change biology call for a revision and improvement of these modelling approaches and associated harvest strategies. This PhD project will aim to build on and improve current stock assessment models, with a focus on integrating the impact of climate change and management. The candidate will work closely with fisheries scientist and managers based at PIRSA/SARDI, as well as with researchers at Adelaide University. Candidates with strong quantitative skills and interests in applied mathematics and/or ecological modelling are encouraged to apply. Research scholarships can be applied for through Adelaide University.
