McGrathNicol is an independent professional services firm specialising in Cyber, Deals, Forensic, Performance, Restructuring, and Risk & Compliance. For more than 20 years, we have supported organisations to navigate critical moments, from growth and transformation through to financial stress and uncertainty, across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. Guided by our values – Understanding, Commitment and Impact – we are client-focused, collaborative and committed to creating an environment where our people can do their best work and continue to grow their careers.

The Opportunity

As a senior leader within our Restructuring practice in Sydney, you will play a central role in helping clients navigate some of the most challenging moments in their business lives. Working closely alongside our Partners, you will engage directly with boards, management teams and financiers facing financial distress working together to quickly get to the heart of the problem, shape practical turnaround strategies and deliver restructures that protect and restore value. You will bring deep expertise to a wide range of mandates across industries and business sizes, and will be a key voice in how we continue to grow and develop the practice as a team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work shoulder-to-shoulder with Partners and clients to develop and execute restructuring and insolvency strategies that are genuinely tailored to each situation.
  • Lead and support engagement teams across multiple workstreams, creating an environment where people do their best work and quality outcomes are a shared goal.
  • Bring rigorous financial analysis and clear strategic thinking to complex problems, helping clients and colleagues alike understand their options and make well-informed decisions.
  • Contribute actively to business development — building relationships, supporting pitch efforts and helping to grow the firm's presence in the market alongside the broader team.
  • Serve as a trusted point of contact for senior client stakeholders, including boards, lenders and investors, working in close partnership with the engagement Partner throughout.
  • Help foster the kind of team culture we're proud of — one built on openness, creativity and a genuine commitment to solving problems together.
  • Invest in the growth of those around you through hands-on coaching and mentoring, sharing your experience and helping managers and junior colleagues develop and thrive.
  • Stay across industry trends, regulatory shifts and emerging practices, bringing fresh thinking back to the team and helping us all stay ahead of the curve.

About You

  • A confident and considered communicator who builds genuine relationships across all levels — from junior team members to client boards.
  • Proven experience in leading and delivering complex, multi-workstream engagements, with a collaborative approach to getting the best from the people around you.
  • Comfortable operating in fast-moving, high-stakes environments — adaptable, resilient and calm when it matters most.
  • Commercially minded, with a natural curiosity about clients' businesses and a genuine interest in helping the firm grow.
  • Warm, curious and principled — someone who genuinely cares about their colleagues, their clients and doing the right thing.
  • High levels of professionalism, discretion and judgement when dealing with sensitive or confidential matters.
