Details: ACT Corrective Services (ACTCS) is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and suitably qualified person to fill the position of Electrical Leading Hand (SBT), in the Facilities Management Unit, located at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC).

Working closely with the Facilities Management and Custodial Operations teams, the Electrical Leading Hand is a key contributor to the delivery of high-quality electrical and adjacent services across the facility.

The successful applicant will undertake a variety of planned and reactive maintenance activities, including the installation, testing, optimisation, upgrade, renovation and repair of electrical infrastructure, systems and appliances to ensure the facility remains safe, humane, compliant and fit for purpose.

In addition, you will coordinate daily work activities, ensuring tasks are completed safely, efficiently, to required standards and timeframes. You will also provide technical expertise for project works, including reviewing plans, advising on electrical requirements and ensuring installations meet compliance and operational needs.

Further to this, you will supervise and work alongside detainees, providing practical instructions and coaching to develop their skills and support rehabilitation goals.

To be successful, you will demonstrate exceptional communication and interpersonal skills and experience in project management in addition to possessing well developed, organisational and communication skills necessary to build rapport with a diverse range of stakeholders.

You will also have proven experience as a skilled Electrician and experience in domestic, commercial and light industrial electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, control systems, safety devices, emergency backup, generation and energy efficiency systems.

Eligibility/Other requirements

  • Background, criminal history and security clearance checks will be conducted.
  • The occupant of this position will be required to:
    • Hold an Australian recognised occupational trade qualification in Electrical (Fitter Mechanic) or Electrotechnology (minimum Certificate III level)
    • Hold an ACT Electrical Licence or have the ability to obtain one prior to commencement.
    • Hold an unrestricted driver’s licence (minimum class C).
    • Prior to commencing this role, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011 is required. For further information on Working with Vulnerable People registration refer to - Apply for or renew a WWVP registration - Access Canberra
    • Pass a pre-employment medical.
    • Undertake parts of the duties outside core business hours.
    • Work a rotating on-call roster.
    • Work across all ACT Corrective Services sites.
    • Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.
    • Telecommunications Technology with endorsements for Structured Cabling and Fibre Optic systems.
    • Security Licence (Installer).
    • Workplace Health and Safety Induction (White Card) or willingness to obtain. General Construction Induction Card (White Card)
    • Working with Asbestos Containing Materials.
    • Prevention Crystalline Silica Exposure.
    • Elevating Work Platform.
    • Working at Heights.

  • Qualifications in the following areas is highly desirable:
    • Experience working within a custodial or secure environment is highly desirable.
    • To be eligible for permanent or temporary employment within the ACT Public Service (ACTPS) you must be an Australian citizen, a permanent resident or hold a valid work visa.
    • If an officer no longer holds a visa that permits them to work in Australia, their employment with the ACT Public Service (ACTPS) will be terminated.

Note: An order of merit will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months.
