System Safety Engineer

On behalf of our clients who operate in the Australian Defence sector I am currently urgently looking for an experienced System Safety Engineer who holds NV1 or above clearance.

The role is being offered as a long term day rate contract and will be based from clients site in Canberra. Please note that due to the nature of the work only candidates that reside in Canberra or would be willing to relocate themselves there can be considered.

THE ROLE

As the System Safety Engineer you will manage and mature the end‑to‑end System Safety Program and provide specialist safety engineering leadership across the Capability Life Cycle.

You will be working closely with engineering, assurance, and contractor teams to ensure safe, compliant, and sustainable outcomes for a critical Defence capability.

Responsibilities include

• Developing, implementing, and maintaining the System Safety Program, including SSPPs, hazard analyses, risk logs, Safety Case Reports, and safety V&V activities
• Executing system safety engineering in accordance with Australian legislation, Defence/CASG policy, and recognised best‑practice standards
• Providing expert safety engineering advice to key stakeholders, including Chief Engineers and Executive Authorities
• Overseeing contractor safety programs and reviewing safety deliverables
• Evaluating engineering changes and planning safety‑related actions
• Coordinating and directing system safety activities across the sustainment lifecycle
• Leading System Safety Reviews and System Safety Working Groups
• Guiding the engineering team on software‑related safety considerations, hazard analysis techniques, risk assessment, and software assurance
• Achieving and exercising Technical Authority delegation as the System Safety Engineer

MANDATORY EXPERIENCE / QUALIFCATIONS REQUIRED

• Bachelor’s degree in Electronic & Communications, Software, or Computer Engineering
• Specialist training in system safety
• Minimum five years’ engineering experience, including leadership of a materiel System Safety Program
• Current NV1 clearance (minimum)

DESIRABLE / EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS

• Chartered Professional Engineer (or equivalent)
• Experience in CASG/ Defence programs, ideally within sustainment
• Familiarity with technical regulatory and assurance frameworks (ICTAP/ETAP, LMSM, DASR, CASG EAF, DSwMS)
• Broader systems engineering exposure — cyber security, configuration management, T&E, quality, technical risk
• Knowledge of Defence C4I systems and software applications
