Hours: Up to 24 hours per week (3 days per week)

Job Summary

An established Federal Government department is seeking an AI Technical Lead to join the AI team within the Information Services Branch. This role will help lead the design and delivery of enterprise AI solutions across the organisation, supporting a growing portfolio of AI and data-driven initiatives.

The role delivers secure, scalable and production-ready AI capabilities aligned with departmental priorities. It combines deep technical architecture expertise with delivery leadership, applying experience in Azure services, API integration and enterprise AI technologies within a regulated government environment.

You will play a key role in shaping the organisation’s AI platform, enabling safe and controlled adoption of AI, and ensuring alignment with AI governance and architecture standards.

Flexible working arrangements may be discussed, however attendance at the Parkes office is expected as part of onsite working arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver enterprise AI solutions, ensuring alignment with architecture standards and secure Azure-based platforms, including AI patterns such as RAG and AI agents
  • Establish and embed secure AI engineering practices and governance controls, ensuring compliance with PSPF, ISM, privacy requirements and Whole of Government AI policy
  • Define, implement and continuously improve the enterprise AI platform and operating model, including lifecycle management, reusable patterns, cost oversight and controlled adoption mechanisms
  • Enable business-led AI adoption by translating policy, governance and business requirements into scalable technical solutions supported by clear guardrails and frameworks
  • Develop and maintain enterprise AI architecture artefacts, standards and guidance, and contribute to governance processes including risk identification, assurance, and support to the AI Steering Committee

Essential Criteria

  1. Enterprise AI Architecture & Delivery Demonstrated experience designing and delivering enterprise-grade AI-enabled solutions in secure government or similarly regulated environments, including Azure-based AI platforms, AI solution patterns such as RAG and AI agents, integration with enterprise systems, and end-to-end delivery from proof-of-concept through to production.
  2. Secure AI Engineering, Governance & Compliance Demonstrated experience establishing and implementing secure architecture and governance frameworks for AI solutions, including guardrails, alignment with Australian Government security and privacy requirements, secure identity and environment design, and data governance and protection controls.
  3. AI Operating Model & Platform Enablement Demonstrated experience defining and operationalising AI platforms and delivery models at enterprise scale, including governance and lifecycle management, cost and usage oversight, and enabling controlled business-led AI adoption within established guardrails.
  4. Technical Leadership & Agile Delivery Demonstrated experience leading multidisciplinary teams to deliver complex technology solutions in agile environments, including establishing delivery practices, uplifting capability, and delivering outcomes within tight timeframes while maintaining architectural integrity.
  5. Stakeholder Engagement, Policy Translation & Communication Demonstrated experience engaging senior stakeholders and translating policy, governance, and business requirements into implementable technical solutions, including development of architecture artefacts, effective communication of complex concepts, and supporting organisational adoption.

Casual Loading

Please note for all Australian based contract and temporary roles only, the pay rate is inclusive of mandatory 25% casual loading. This excludes permanent and fixed term roles.
