Project Engineer (Structural/Civil)

Kneebone and Beretta Consulting

Date: 1 week ago
City: Castle Hill, New South Wales
Est. A$117,637 - A$130,188 / yr
Contract type: Full time

The shear volume of work has become a problem. It is, admittedly, the good kind of problem but the load path currently runs through four engineers and we would like to add a fifth before something yields.

Kneebone & Beretta Consulting is a structural and civil engineering and building design firm, established in 1963 and based in Castle Hill, NSW. We work predominantly in the residential market, with a broad mix of alterations, additions, new dwellings, pools, retaining structures and stormwater design, alongside defect and modification assessment across residential, commercial and industrial buildings. The variety is genuine, the work a Project Engineer sees here broadens as their experience develops rather than narrowing.

We are seeking a Project Engineer with 4–10 years' experience in structural and civil consulting to join our team of four engineers and our drafting team.

Responsibilities

Site inspections

- Initial investigations for alterations to residential dwellings, including assessment of existing buildings for first-floor additions.

- Inspection of existing residential homes and unit buildings to assess and report on defects.

- Inspections during construction, including bearing and soil assessment, reinforcing steel and structural steel.

Structural design

- Beam design, including column supports and assessment of existing support conditions.

- Footing design, including foundation slabs, pad footings and strip footings across residential construction types.

- Reinforced concrete pool design.

- Retaining wall design.

- Software includes Microstran, Inducta and Drains. Calculations begin by hand during training and develop into spreadsheet-based design.

Stormwater design

- Residential stormwater systems designed to the requirements of the relevant council.

- Gravity pipe flow and charged line systems.

- On-site detention and absorption systems.

Reporting and certification

- Preliminary inspection and reporting across residential, commercial and industrial buildings, covering assessment for defects and assessment for modification or alteration.

- Preparation of certificates.

Client liaison

- Arranging inspections and liaising with clients, builders and contractors through construction.

Training and development

You would be working in an office with four engineers and a drafting team. We operate on an open-door policy and actively encourage discussion and questions about projects, training and supervision come from collaboration with the engineers around you, not from a manual alone.

- In-house training in the general operating procedures of the office (Quality Manual).

- Training in the preparation of technical reports. High-level written communication skills are expected from the outset.

- Monthly engineers' meetings where the whole engineering team discusses recent projects, code and regulation changes, product information and council requirements. Presentations are organised within the office to cover new topics or update our position on particular project types.

Kneebone & Beretta actively promotes ongoing training and development and encourages membership with Engineers Australia. We are members of Engineers Australia, Consult Australia and ACSE NSW, and candidates are encouraged to attend the webinars and seminars available through those partnerships. We operate within the Engineers Australia Code of Ethics for professional engineers.

About you

- 4–10 years' experience in structural and civil engineering consulting.

- A sound fundamental understanding of structural engineering concepts.

- A clear and concise communicator, in writing and in person.

- The ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.

- Good record keeping.

- The ability to follow instruction and to operate professionally and courteously with staff and clients.

- A valid driver's licence.

- A NSW general construction induction card (White Card) would be of benefit.

What we offer

- Direct access to four experienced engineers and a genuine open-door policy.

- Structured monthly technical development and support for CPD and Engineers Australia membership.

- A varied residential-focused workload with the scope to broaden as your experience develops.

- A stable, established practice 1963 to now.
