The Opportunity
The Department of Transport and Main Roads plays a defining role in shaping Queensland's future through the delivery, operation and stewardship of one of Australia's largest transport infrastructure portfolios.
Today the department manages the State Controlled Road Network valued at more than $100 billion while delivering a record $55 billion infrastructure investment program across Queensland.
Beyond constructing new infrastructure, the department is responsible for ensuring Queensland's transport assets continue to operate safely, efficiently and sustainably while supporting economic growth, stronger communities and future generations.
This newly established Associate Director-General, Road Integration position reflects the increasing scale and complexity of Queensland's road network.
Reporting directly to the Director-General, the role has been created to strengthen executive leadership across road integration, asset stewardship, infrastructure delivery and statewide operational performance.
As the Director-General's trusted executive partner across the road portfolio, you will help shape the future of Queensland's largest public asset while strengthening organisational capability, improving delivery performance and ensuring Government priorities are successfully realised.
Key responsibilities
As Associate Director-General, Road Integration, you will provide executive leadership across one of Australia's largest and most significant public infrastructure portfolios.
You will balance strategic leadership with practical delivery oversight while providing trusted advice to Government and building confidence across the department, industry and regional Queensland.
Executive Leadership and Road Integration
Providing executive leadership across Queensland's road infrastructure portfolio, ensuring the successful integration of infrastructure delivery, asset stewardship and network operations.
Working closely with the Director-General to help shape long term strategy while strengthening executive oversight across one of Queensland's most significant public assets.
Infrastructure Delivery and Program Performance
Lead executive oversight of Queensland's major road infrastructure program, ensuring Government priorities and election commitments are delivered safely, efficiently and effectively.
You will proactively identify delivery risks, strengthen governance, improve organisational performance and create greater consistency across statewide infrastructure delivery.
Strategic Decision Making and Public Value
Provide balanced, evidence-based advice across complex infrastructure, engineering, commercial, financial and governance matters. Drawing upon multidisciplinary expertise, you will make informed executive decisions that optimise investment, manage risk and deliver lasting value for Queensland communities.
Government and Stakeholder Leadership
Build trusted relationships with Ministers, central agencies, local government, regional leaders, industry and community stakeholders. You will represent the department with credibility and integrity while providing executive leadership on complex stakeholder matters across Queensland.
People Leadership and Organisational Capability
Lead a high performing executive team by fostering collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement. You will strengthen organisational capability, invest in future leaders and create an environment where technical expertise, innovation and sound judgement are valued.
Asset Stewardship and Continuous Improvement
Champion the long-term stewardship of Queensland's State Controlled Road Network by driving innovation across infrastructure delivery, engineering and asset management. You will support continual improvement in how the department plans, delivers, operates and maintains Queensland's road network while ensuring robust governance and responsible stewardship of public investment.
About you

You are an accomplished infrastructure executive who combines strategic thinking with practical delivery expertise and understands the responsibility that comes with leading within a complex public sector environment.
You have successfully led major infrastructure portfolios and understand the importance of balancing technical excellence with sound judgement, stakeholder confidence and public accountability.
You are comfortable working alongside Ministers, senior executives, local government and industry while building trusted relationships across geographically dispersed teams.
You lead through influence rather than hierarchy.
You value technical expertise, invest in developing capability and bring people together to solve complex challenges. Your leadership is characterised by integrity, courage, collaboration and a genuine commitment to delivering public value.
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:
- Proven executive leadership within large, complex government or public infrastructure environments.
- Significant experience leading major road, transport or comparable infrastructure delivery programs.
- Sophisticated political, strategic and commercial judgement.
- Outstanding stakeholder engagement across Government, industry and regional communities.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation and influencing capability.
- Demonstrated experience leading organisational improvement and developing high performing executive teams.
- A strong commitment to public value, responsible stewardship of taxpayer investment and delivering better outcomes for Queensland communities.
Mandatory qualifications and conditions
- Appointment is offered on a five-year Senior Executive Service contract.
- Classification Level HLSE 4.
- This position is based in Brisbane and requires regular travel throughout Queensland.
- Due to the nature of the role, a criminal history check will be undertaken prior to appointment.
- Preferred applicants will be required to disclose any serious disciplinary history in accordance with the Public
- Sector Act 2022.
- Preferred applicants will also be required to declare any current or previous employment as a lobbyist where required under Queensland Government policy.
- Verification of qualifications, employment history, referee checks and other relevant pre-employment screening may be undertaken before appointment.
