The opportunity

We have a rare opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel to join our high-performing in-house legal team, supporting the Australian Claims division. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel – Claims, this is a pivotal role offering the chance to influence claims outcomes, mentor junior talent, and provide strategic legal advice across a range of complex matters.

This is more than a legal advisory role – it's a position that will see you partnering with the claims teams to deliver practical, commercially sound advice that improves decisions and reduces disputes.

About QBE

At QBE, we get to the heart of what matters for our customers. And we do it all with a human touch.

We’re an international insurer with more than 13,000 people working across 26 countries – which means we’re big enough for your ambitions, yet small enough for you to make a real impact. It’s an exciting time. We’re building momentum towards our vision to become the most consistent and innovative risk partner.

What if you could have a positive impact – at work and in the world? As part of the QBE team, you’ll get to spend every day working with people who are passionate, talented and kind.

Your new role

Your role will involve the provision of coverage / indemnity advice across the general insurance claims division (predominantly public liability, property and professional indemnity claims), together with strategic input into litigated and un-litigated disputes. You will also be expected to mentor and supervise less experienced members of the legal team.

The role is critical to the claims function by providing:

  • improved claims decisions

  • reduced claim disputes, including litigated disputes

  • reduced claims costs through reduced external legal spend on both coverage and claim disputes

  • insight on emerging trends provided to senior claims managers

About you

You’re an experienced insurance lawyer with strong technical skills and a commercial mindset. You enjoy solving complex problems, mentoring junior team members, and working closely with stakeholders to drive better outcomes. This role will suit someone with around 6+ years’ post-qualification experience (PQE), ideally gained in private practice at a law firm specialising in insurance law.

To succeed in this role, you’ll need:

  • Expertise in public liability and/or professional indemnity and/or property insurance, with strong coverage and policy interpretation skills.

  • A solid litigation background and confidence managing disputes.

  • Ability to work as part of a small team with minimal supervision, navigate uncertainty and demonstrate initiative.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong relationships across the business.

  • Commercial awareness and a practical, solutions-focused approach.

Benefits

We offer a range of benefits to help provide holistic support for your work life, whatever your circumstances. As a QBE employee you will have access to and benefit from:
