Independent Director Positions for Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation (BTAC)

The Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation (BTAC) the Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBC) for the Thalanyji People are seeking expressions of interest for one Independent Director for BTAC.

About the Organisations

BTAC represents the Thalanyji People through Native Title Determination WCD2008/003, driving strategic growth, governance, and community development for its members.

Role Descriptions

Independent Director – BTAC

The Independent Director will provide strategic guidance, drive business opportunities, and build board capacity. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and strategic oversight to support BTAC’s growth.
  • Ensuring adherence to high standards of governance.
  • Contributing to the development and execution of BTAC’s strategic plan.
  • Promoting effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Attending board meetings, which may involve occasional intrastate travel.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Independence: Must be independent of the organisations.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a director of an Australian company or in a professional, financial, or business management role.
  • Financial Literacy: Must be financially literate.
  • Leadership: Proven record of accomplishment and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Absence of Conflicts: No commitments that conflict with the role.
  • Reputation and Integrity: High repute, no convictions (excluding minor offences like traffic violations), and not disqualified from managing a corporation under the Corporations Act, CATSI Act, or other applicable laws.
  • Director ID and Police Check: Ability to provide a Director ID and an acceptable National Police Certificate.
  • Board Education: Completion (or commitment to complete within the first year) of an approved director’s governance course (e.g., ORIC, ACNC, or AICD training).
  • Expertise: Demonstrable experience in governance, financial management, or business development.
  • Strategic Planning: Minimum of 5 years’ experience developing or executing strategic plans.
  • Membership or fellowship with AICD or Governance Institute is highly regarded.

Favourable Experience

  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities, administering charitable trusts, or successful business development.

Commitment

  • BTAC: The Independent Director role is a 2-year term, with meetings as required and occasional intrastate travel.
