Aboriginal Youth Justice Officer

The Courts Administration Authority is an independent statutory authority responsible for providing the administrative facilities and services that support the proper administration of justice across South Australia’s courts.The Youth, Aboriginal and Cross Court Support Services Directorate, it works to improve the cultural appropriateness of court services for Aboriginal court users and their families, with a particular focus on supporting Aboriginal young people in the Youth Court.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking a culturally aware and community-focused professionals for a fixed term contract who understands Aboriginal history and culture, and is committed to improving outcomes for Aboriginal court users, particularly young people and their families. You will bring strong interpersonal skills, sound judgement, and the ability to work confidently with court staff, the judiciary, Elders, young people, families, and community stakeholders in a demanding environment.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Provide culturally responsive information and support to Aboriginal court users, their families, and the wider Aboriginal community, including guidance on court processes, procedures, and available external support services, with a focus on Youth Court matters.
• Assist the judiciary and court staff to better understand Aboriginal history, culture, community issues, and the circumstances affecting Aboriginal defendants through discussions, training, and awareness activities, including matters affecting young people.
• Support the administration of Aboriginal Sentencing Courts, Aboriginal Sentencing Conferences, and Aboriginal Community Courts across South Australia, as well as Youth Court-related processes where required.
• Build and maintain productive relationships with Aboriginal communities, while helping recruit, train, and support Elders and Respected Persons to work with the Courts.
• Contribute to community education about the criminal justice system and help ensure court services are delivered in a culturally appropriate and respectful way for Aboriginal young people and their families.

Skills & Experience

• A strong understanding of, and respect for, Aboriginal culture and history, including lived experience or awareness of the impacts and past government policies.
• Experience working with Aboriginal people in a service or support role, with a clear commitment to culturally safe practice.
• Experience working with young people, families, or in a youth justice environment would be highly regarded.
• Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with people across the criminal justice system and broader community.
• Strong organisational skills, including the ability to facilitate meetings, training sessions, and conferences, and to work accurately to deadlines with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated team capability, initiative, and problem-solving ability; experience in the criminal justice system and knowledge of Aboriginal agencies and services in South Australia would be highly regarded.
