The Courts Administration Authority is an independent authority established under the Courts Administration Act 1993. The Youth, Aboriginal and Cross Court Support Services Directorate, supports culturally responsive services across South Australia’s courts and aims to improve outcomes for Aboriginal court users and their families.
Who we are looking for
We are seeking a culturally respectful and resilient Aboriginal Justice Officer for a fixed term contract who can build trusted relationships with Aboriginal communities, Elders, court users and service providers. You will bring strong communication skills, sound judgement and the ability to work with sensitivity, impartiality and discretion in a high-trust environment.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide culturally sensitive information and frontline support to Aboriginal court users, the judiciary and court staff.
- Assist with the administration of Aboriginal Sentencing Courts, Aboriginal Sentencing Conferences and Aboriginal Community Courts.
- Help the judiciary and registry staff understand Aboriginal history, culture, community issues and the circumstances affecting court users.
- Build and maintain relationships with Aboriginal communities, Elders and Respected Persons, including supporting their recruitment, training and ongoing engagement.
- Contribute to community education about court processes, criminal justice procedures and access to relevant external support services, while travelling to metropolitan, regional and remote locations as required.
Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal culture and history, including the impact of past government policies, or lived experience with a genuine commitment to improving outcomes.
- Experience supporting Aboriginal people in a service, community or justice-related role, with the ability to link clients to appropriate legal and support services.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to communicate respectfully and impartially with a wide range of stakeholders, including Elders and community contacts.
- Ability to organise and facilitate meetings, training sessions, conferences and community engagement activities, with experience working independently and as part of a team in a demanding environment.
- Emotional resilience, initiative and sound problem-solving skills, with the flexibility to work across multiple court locations and handle sensitive matters with discretion.
