About the role

Lead the delivery of critical civil asphalt construction, maintenance and infrastructure works across the city. In this hands-on leadership role, you will oversee a team of Labourers, Plant Operators, Truck Drivers and contractors, ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

You will coordinate daily operations, provide on-site leadership and ensure work is carried out in accordance with project plans, specifications and operational requirements. With a strong focus on safety, quality and productivity, you will ensure plant and equipment are operated correctly and all activities comply with relevant legislation, standards and workplace procedures.

Role accountabilities include:

  • Lead and coordinate a Civil Works Asphalt Construction team, fostering a high-performance culture that reflects Council's values, safety standards and service excellence.
  • Plan, organise and oversee daily construction, asphalt and maintenance activities, ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with agreed targets and quality requirements.
  • Champion workplace health and safety by identifying and managing risks, leading incident investigations, implementing corrective actions and ensuring compliance with SWMS, SOPs and Council procedures.
  • Provide clear direction, mentoring and technical guidance to team members, trainees and contractors, supporting capability development across civil construction and asphalt works.
  • Conduct toolbox meetings, site inductions and safety briefings to ensure workers, contractors and visitors understand site hazards, control measures and PPE requirements.
  • Assist with the development and interpretation of construction plans, working closely with the Coordinator Construction Projects to achieve operational objectives and project outcomes.
  • Operate and supervise the use of plant, machinery and specialised equipment while maintaining accurate records, timesheets and costing information to support effective project delivery.

About you

The successful candidate will possess, or be willing to obtain, a Certificate IV in Civil Construction and a current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People. A Medium Rigid Driver Licence is highly regarded. Combined with strong civil construction experience, this role requires a capable leader with the technical knowledge, practical expertise and confidence to manage teams and deliver outcomes in a fast-paced, high-risk construction environment.

You are an experienced and hands-on leader with a proven ability to supervise and motivate teams, while mentoring and developing trainees and emerging employees. With strong worksite traffic management knowledge and a commitment to safety, you confidently apply quality and risk controls to ensure works are completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.

Your practical experience includes operating a range of civil construction plant and equipment, including excavators, rollers, skid steer loaders, compaction equipment, quick-cut saws, jackhammers and other power tools. You bring a proactive approach, strong problem-solving skills and a passion for delivering quality civil construction outcomes while leading by example.
