Data Engineer

Join a major, multi-year data transformation program delivering a modern enterprise data platform that will improve analytics, reporting and evidence-based decision-making across a large and complex organisation.
We are seeking a hands-on Data Engineer with strong Microsoft Fabric and Azure experience to design, build and operate secure, reliable data pipelines and reusable data products.
You will work within an emerging enterprise data platform environment, partnering with governance specialists, analysts, data stewards and product owners to deliver trusted, high-quality data for business intelligence and reporting.
The Role You will be responsible for building ingestion and transformation processes across Bronze, Silver and Gold data layers, developing curated datasets and semantic models, integrating Microsoft Purview governance controls, and automating deployment and monitoring.

- Contract to June 30th 2027 with likely extension
- Paying up to $1060 per day
Key responsibilities include
- Building and operating pipelines using Microsoft Fabric Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, Notebooks, Spark, Lakehouse, OneLake and SQL Endpoints
- Designing Bronze, Silver and Gold data layers using medallion architecture
- Developing dimensional models, semantic models and reusable data products for Power BI
- Using SQL, PySpark and dbt to transform and serve enterprise data
- Running and scheduling Microsoft Purview scans
- Applying classifications, sensitivity labels, lineage and metadata controls
- Implementing automated data quality checks, validation rules and testing
- Applying privacy-by-design and security principles, including RBAC, managed identities, masking and audit logging
- Establishing Git-based CI/CD workflows through Azure DevOps
- Monitoring pipelines, resolving incidents and optimising performance, storage and compute costs
- Maintaining technical documentation, runbooks and data dictionaries
- Contributing to reusable engineering standards, templates and delivery patterns
You will bring
- At least five years of commercial data engineering experience
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Fabric
- Advanced SQL and PySpark capability
- Experience delivering production-grade data pipelines and curated datasets
- Practical experience with Azure data services such as Azure Data Factory, Synapse or Databricks
- Hands-on Microsoft Purview experience, including scans, collections, classifications, glossary and lineage
- Strong knowledge of medallion architecture and dimensional modelling
- Experience serving data to Power BI
- CI/CD experience using Azure DevOps
- A strong understanding of data security, privacy and governance
- Experience working with data stewards, custodians, analysts and technical stakeholders
- Strong documentation and stakeholder communication skills
Exposure to Bicep, Terraform or other Infrastructure-as-Code tooling will be highly regarded.
