The Position

The Australian National University is internationally recognised for research that advances health and wellbeing outcomes. Within the National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health (NCEPH) at the College of Law, Governance & Policy (CLGP), Yardhura Walani provides a dynamic and collaborative environment focused on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wellbeing research.

CLGP combines world-class research and education across law, public policy, and governance. Bringing together the ANU Law School, Crawford School of Public Policy, RegNet, and NCEPH, the College fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to address complex national and global challenges and deliver impactful, policy-relevant outcomes

The Kulay Kalingka Study is a nationally significant Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer cohort study that collects and analyses data to support reporting against National Cancer Control Indicators and to inform evidence-based policy and program development. This role presents an exciting opportunity to lead impactful research that contributes directly to improving cancer outcomes and broader health and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

You will provide leadership across all aspects of the study, including coordinating national data collection, overseeing reporting, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality research outputs. You will work collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, government agencies, and partner organisations, building strong, trusted relationships to support meaningful and culturally appropriate research. The role also includes leading academic outputs, supervising research staff and students, and contributing to the translation of research findings into policy and practice.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the Kulay Kalingka Study, ensuring effective delivery of research objectives
• Coordinate national data collection with community sites and health services
• Oversee reporting aligned with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Control Indicators
• Develop and maintain strong partnerships with community, government, and sector stakeholders
• Lead research outputs including publications, presentations, and translation activities
• Supervise research staff and postgraduate students
• Contribute to research funding, grant management, and strategic initiatives

The Person

• A PhD (or equivalent) in epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or a related discipline, with a strong track record of research achievement
• Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, including culturally respectful engagement
• Proven ability to lead research projects and collaborate across organisations and sectors
• A track record of securing external research funding and delivering high-quality outputs
• Experience supervising research staff and higher degree research students
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective partnerships
