Senior Legal Counsel
Australian Naval Infrastructure (ANI)
Australian Naval Infrastructure Pty Ltd (ANI) is the owner, developer and manager of ship and submarine building and sustainment infrastructure at the Osborne Naval Shipyard. ANI is responsible for designing, constructing and managing the shipyard infrastructure, including the new Nuclear-Powered Submarine Construction Yard to support the AUKUS program, and operating and maintaining common use facilities.
Following an internal promotion, together with increasing volume and complexity of activity, ANI is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Counsel to join its legal team. This is a unique opportunity to be part of one of Australia’s most complex and strategically important infrastructure projects and would be well suited to a Senior Associate looking to make the move inhouse, or an experienced inhouse counsel looking for their next challenge.
Reporting to the General Counsel, this role will work closely with commercial, procurement, technical, operational and project personnel across the business, providing practical, commercially focused legal support across ANI’s operations. The role offers exposure to complex and high-value infrastructure, procurement, governance and regulatory matters and plays a key role in helping ANI manage its risk and legal and compliance obligations.
Based at ANI’s CBD office, key responsibilities include:
- drafting, reviewing and negotiating a broad range of agreements to manage ANI’s risk exposure, rights and obligations while meeting commercial and operational objectives;
- working closely with internal teams to support procurement activities;
- delivering legal support for ANI’s non‑procurement arrangements, including confidentiality deeds, licences, access permits, regulatory matters and property‑related transactions;
- contributing to the development and maintenance of ANI’s suite of standard contracts and agreements;
- assisting in educating ANI personnel on legal, governance and compliance obligations.
The role will suit an experienced legal professional ideally from commercial, infrastructure/property, and/or projects practice areas or an in-house lawyer from an engineering/technical or project-based environment. Important qualities include the ability to work independently and proactively in the provision of commercial and practical legal advice on a broad range of matters, exceptional writing skills and attention to detail and the ability to clearly communicate legal concepts to non-legally qualified colleagues. Being well organised, results focussed and with the ability to collaborate using highly effective interpersonal skills are all essential for success in this role.
Applicants must hold a current South Australian practising certificate (unrestricted) and must be able to gain and maintain appropriate security clearances and background checks.
ANI offers a dynamic working environment (including a compressed 9-day fortnight) in a supportive and collaborative team. Part-time would be considered for the right candidate.
