Geotechnical Engineer

You will play a critical role in the restart of a major underground silver-lead-zinc mine in Broken Hill, NSW. With the mine having been closed and unventilated since 2023, you will lead the geotechnical re-entry process, inspecting underground workings, assessing ground conditions and supporting the safe reopening of mining areas ahead of the planned November 2026 restart.
Working as part of a newly established technical services team, you will provide specialist geotechnical guidance across a complex and mature underground operation. You will manage challenging ground conditions, seismicity at depth and substantial remnant mining, with your technical decisions directly supporting the safe progression of the restart
This is an initial six-month contract with a strong likelihood of extension. You will work an 8/6 back-to-back roster on day shift, with FIFO/DIDO arrangements availabl e.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead geotechnical inspections and re-entry of closed underground workings
• Assess ground conditions and identify geotechnical risks during re-entry
• Develop and update ground support standards as conditions change
• Provide practical geotechnical guidance to mining and technical teams
• Support the safe rehabilitation and reopening of underground areas
• Assess and manage risks associated with seismicity and remnant mining
• Establish geotechnical controls and recommendations for ongoing mining
• Communicate geotechnical risks and recommendations clearly across site
About you
• Extensive underground hard-rock geotechnical experience
• Strong experience with remnant mining and/or seismically active operations
• Deep working knowledge of underground ground support standards
• Proven ability to assess complex and changing ground conditions
• Sound technical decision-making in challenging underground environments
• Strong communication skills with mining and technical stakeholders
