About the role

As a Legal Counsel, you will play a key role in supporting the optimum functioning of the Legal Team for an award winning Australian operated insurance company. You will work closely with the Head of Legal and Company Secretary and the Legal team in ensuring legal matters are managed efficiently, effectively and in line with regulatory obligations. This role sits within the Risk and Governance department, also providing you with the opportunity to collaborate with other members of the wider legal team.

Duties

In this role, you will:-

  • Work closely with and report to the Head of Legal and Company Secretary, as well as the wider Risk & Governance team
  • Advise the company's business units and senior management on matters including AFS licensing requirements, legal documentation and legislative and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Draft and prepare correspondence, submissions, papers and terms of new business contracts with third parties and suppliers
  • Liaise with auditors, lawyers, regulators, company representatives and other relevant bodies (e.g. APRA, ASIC, AFCA, OIAC)
  • Contribute to projects, knowledge management and the continuous improvement of workflows and efficiency of the Legal Department.

Skills & experience

The ideal candidate will have:-

  • 3 to 5 years' PAE with broad experience in general corporate/commercial law (gained in-house or in private practice) and financial services law (advantage)
  • Knowledge of financial services laws, including Corporations, Australian Consumer and Insurance law
  • Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills to listen and understand issues, and provide clear guidance and advice
  • Strong attention to detail and initiative in identifying and solving problems
  • Proven effectiveness in managing multiple stakeholders and balancing competing priorities
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a team setting
