HSE Superintendent – Civil Construction

Perth Based | Hybrid Office & Site Role | Periodic FIFO | Permanent Opportunity

ACE Workforce is seeking an experienced HSE Superintendent to join an established civil construction contractor delivering major projects across Western Australia.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced HSE professional looking for a predominantly Perth-based position while remaining connected to site operations.

The role will be primarily based in Perth, with periodic travel to WA project sites to provide operational HSE leadership, support project teams and provide site coverage as required.

We are looking for someone already operating at HSE Superintendent or senior HSE leadership level who can confidently move between strategic HSEQ responsibilities and practical, hands-on site safety leadership.

The Role

Reporting to the HSEQ Manager and providing leadership to the broader HSE team, you will be responsible for supporting the consistent implementation and continuous improvement of HSE systems and standards across multiple projects.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead, mentor and support HSE Advisors and other HSE personnel across multiple projects
  • Implement, maintain and continually improve company HSEQ Management Systems
  • Support compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 14001, relevant WHS legislation, Codes of Practice, Australian Standards and client requirements
  • Support compliance with the OFSC WHS Accreditation Scheme
  • Provide strategic and operational HSE advice to management and project teams
  • Conduct and support site inspections and internal audits
  • Monitor compliance across employees, contractors and subcontractors
  • Drive continuous improvement in HSE performance through visible leadership and proactive engagement
  • Lead and review incident and near-miss investigations
  • Apply structured root-cause investigation methodologies including ICAM
  • Develop, monitor and close out corrective actions and communicate lessons learned across projects
  • Facilitate the identification, assessment and control of HSE risks
  • Participate in Construction Risk Assessment Workshops (CRAW) and other risk management activities
  • Review and support SWMS, JHAs, risk assessments and project-specific HSE documentation
  • Support project mobilisation and ensure HSE systems and requirements are established from commencement
  • Assist with injury management and return-to-work processes where required
  • Support training and development initiatives aligned with operational risk
  • Work closely with the HSEQ Manager to deliver organisational HSE objectives
  • Provide periodic site coverage and operational support across WA projects as required

About You

This is a senior HSE position, and we are looking for someone with a demonstrated track record within civil construction, mining, resources, infrastructure or a comparable high-risk environment.

You will ideally bring:

  • Current or recent experience as an HSE Superintendent, HSEQ Superintendent, Senior HSE professional or equivalent
  • Significant HSE experience within civil construction
  • Strong understanding of operational/site-based construction activities
  • Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring HSE Advisors
  • Strong knowledge of WA WHS legislation and regulatory requirements
  • Experience implementing and improving HSEQ Management Systems
  • Strong auditing, compliance and risk-management capability
  • Extensive incident investigation experience
  • Practical experience with ICAM or equivalent root-cause investigation methodology
  • Experience working across multiple projects or operational locations
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills across frontline personnel, Supervisors, Project Managers, senior management, clients and contractors
  • Ability to influence safety culture rather than simply administer compliance
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach with strong attention to detail

Qualifications

We are specifically looking for candidates with qualifications and experience beyond a standalone Certificate IV in Work Health & Safety.

You will ideally hold:

  • Diploma, Advanced Diploma or tertiary qualification in Work Health & Safety, Occupational Health & Safety or a related discipline
  • ICAM / Lead Incident Investigation qualification or equivalent

Additional qualifications or experience in the following will be highly regarded:

  • Lead or Internal Auditing
  • Training & Assessment
  • Workers Compensation & Injury Management
  • Critical Risk Management
  • First Aid
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Drug & Alcohol Testing
  • Environmental or Quality Management Systems
  • ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 / ISO 9001 systems

What Makes This Opportunity Different?

This position offers the opportunity to remain closely involved in major civil projects without being committed to a permanent FIFO roster.

You will be predominantly Perth-based, working at a senior organisational level while travelling to site periodically to provide HSE leadership, project support and coverage for leave or operational gaps when required.

It would particularly suit an established site-based HSE Superintendent who is looking for greater Perth stability without stepping away from operational HSE or taking a backwards career move.

You’ll have the opportunity to influence HSE standards across multiple projects, mentor HSE professionals and work closely with senior operational leadership to continually improve safety performance.

Interested?

If you’re an experienced HSE Superintendent considering your next move, we’d love to hear from you.
