Systems Test Engineer

Contract type: Full time

An established professional electronics company with an international customer base is strengthening its engineering function and is now hiring a Systems Test Engineer to bring engineering level rigour to how its hardware products are tested.

In this role you will take responsibility for system level testing of complex electronic hardware, working out what each product is designed to do and then proving, precisely, whether it does it. The work centres on whether something is correct rather than whether it looks right. If a known test signal goes into a device and a particular processing step or transform is applied, is the output exactly what the specification says it should be? Does a change to a configuration setting behave correctly across the whole system? You will design test approaches for new products from the ground up, generate and analyse test signals, and build automated setups that feed signals in, capture what comes out and check the result. Modern AI assisted tooling is expected to be a growing part of that automation. This is testing at the level of the complete product, where hardware, firmware and software meet, rather than writing low level unit tests or confirming that a button press produces the expected screen. The business already runs user level and compatibility testing, and this hire adds a deeper engineering capability alongside it. You will work closely with the engineering team and have real latitude to decide how each product should be tested. It suits someone who naturally asks how a system is meant to work and how that could be verified, who enjoys digging into a complex product until its behaviour is properly understood, and who is comfortable working independently from a brief rather than a prewritten test plan. The ideal background is one shaped by software, electronics or hardware engineering that has since moved into test, verification or quality, rather than a career built mainly on manual or web application testing.

This role is open to either a permanent full-time hire or an hourly rate contract engagement, and in both cases the work is 38 to 40 hours per week. It is Melbourne based and on site in the office, as the work relies on direct access to products and test equipment. For interstate candidates, relocation is required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and carry out system level testing of electronic hardware products, defining what correct behaviour looks like and how each feature will be verified.
  • Generate known test signals and use them to confirm that each processing and conversion stage produces precisely the expected output.
  • Investigate how hardware, firmware and software settings interact, and isolate the root cause when a product behaves incorrectly.
  • Build and extend automated test setups that inject signals, capture outputs and compare results, using scripting and AI assisted tools to increase coverage.
  • Create, maintain and run structured test cases, and record defects clearly enough for engineers to reproduce and fix them.
  • Work closely with the engineering team and the wider QA function to raise the technical depth and consistency of product testing.

Requirements:

  • Degree in electrical or electronic engineering, computer engineering, software engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience in an engineering role in software, electronics or hardware that has included substantial test, verification or validation of complex products.
  • Strong engineering reasoning, with the ability to turn a specification into precise, measurable tests and to judge whether a result is genuinely correct.
  • Proficiency in Python or a similar scripting language for test automation, data capture and analysis.
  • Clear written communication, including well-structured test cases and defect reports, and the ability to work independently while collaborating closely with engineers.

Desirable but not essential:

  • Background testing signal processing, embedded systems or other hardware products where output must be verified against a precise specification.
  • Experience with signal generation, capture and measurement equipment in a test or laboratory environment.
  • Exposure to test automation frameworks, test case management platforms or AI assisted testing tools.
