Financial Accountant

A Melbourne-based energy business is seeking a Senior Accountant to join on a contract-to-permanent basis, with a clear pathway into a Finance Manager role. This position is critical in supporting the finance team through a busy period, including year-end, ERP implementation, and ongoing transformation initiatives.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone who can hit the ground running and add value quickly in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

The Opportunity

We are partnering with a dynamic and growing organisation in the energy retailer sector to recruit a Senior Accountant on a contract-to-permanent basis, with a clear pathway into a Finance Manager role.

This is a pivotal hire at a critical time for the business, supporting the finance function, ERP implementation, and a broader finance transformation program.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Close

• Lead and support the month-end close process, ensuring deadlines are met with accuracy
• Play a key role in year-end reporting and audit deliverables
• Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations, working alongside a Project Accountant building out recs
• Ensure the integrity of financial data and compliance with accounting standards

Management Reporting & Analysis

• Deliver accurate and insightful management reports to support business decision-making
• Analyse and monitor Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) and margin performance
• Provide variance analysis and identify trends, risks, and opportunities
• Support commercial decision-making through financial insights

Business Partnering

• Partner with key stakeholders across operations, commercial, and other departments
• Build strong working relationships to improve financial understanding across the business
• Provide guidance and support for budgeting, forecasting, and cost management
• Act as a trusted advisor to both finance and non-finance teams

Projects & Systems

• Support ongoing ERP implementation initiatives
• Identify and drive process improvements and efficiencies within finance
• Contribute to finance transformation projects, including systems and reporting enhancements
• Assist in strengthening internal controls and financial processes

About You

• Proven experience as a Senior Accountant or Financial Accountant
• Exposure to retail energy or utilities is highly desirable
• Strong background in:
  • Management reporting
  • COGS / cost analysis / margin reporting
  • Month-end and year-end close processes
• CA or CPA qualified
• Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and hit the ground running
• Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
• Experience with ERP systems or system implementations is advantageous
• Proactive, adaptable, and hands-on approach with a positive attitude
