Walker Bartels | Melbourne (work from home + site) | Full-time

Walker Bartels is a Melbourne-based forensic and structural engineering consultancy. Since 2023 we've built a reputation for high quality reporting and engineering solutions for a wide variety of clients, including home owners, lawyers, commercial building managers, strata managers, etc.

As a young firm in a genuine growth phase, we have real opportunities for people to develop into leadership positions.

The role

You will initially be responsible for undertaking site inspections and preparing reports, with day-to-day tasks involving:

  • Inspecting residential and commercial buildings to diagnose defects, damage and distress, including differential footing movement, cracking, water ingress/inundation, structural failure, deterioration, impact damage, etc.
  • Capturing site data including photographic records and floor level surveys
  • Preparing reports identifying root cause, and providing detailed recommendations for remediation, monitoring, etc.
  • Expert witness reports, and attendance to court/tribunal hearings where requested.
  • Inspections for council emergency orders or make safe

If your role develops into a leadership position you will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing reports for the forensic team
  • Providing training and support for the forensic team
  • Delegating, tracking and managing projects for the forensic team
  • Growth and development of the forensic team

About you

You're an engineer who enjoys the investigative side of the job – working out why something has failed, and providing a solution which addresses the route cause. Just as important:

  • Practical experience. You understand how buildings actually go together. Hands-on construction knowledge is highly valued here.
  • A strong communicator. You can explain technical findings to non-technical clients clearly, in writing and in person, personable and easy to work with.
  • Looking for a long-term home, not a stepping stone. We're building something for the long haul and want someone who wants to build it with us, and grow as the company grows.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Registered Professional Engineer (Victoria)
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng)
  • A current driver's licence and a reliable vehicle
  • 7+ years experience in forensic/remedial engineering
  • The right to work in Australia

Desirable:

  • Structural design and/or drafting experience

What we offer

  • Career growth and opportunity to develop into leadership positions – As a young and firm, we are looking for people to grow with our company, and lead their own teams. Training and support will be offered throughout your career.
  • Variety and challenge – experience a variety of projects and clients including home owners, lawyers, commercial building managers, strata managers, etc.
  • Work from home – flexibility with a combination of working from home and getting out on site away from your desk
