Supplying Bicycles to Positively Change People’s Lives in Africa and Remote Australia

  • Well-established Charity
  • Providing a lasting legacy
  • A great role for an experienced leader looking to make a difference

Linked to the global charity, Bicycles for Humanity (WA) aims to break the cycle of poverty through donating refurbished, pre-loved bicycles to disadvantaged communities. For 15 years, B4H WA has been successful sending bikes to NGO and/or Corporate partners in Africa and to schools and community organisations in remote WA/NT. They are entirely volunteer run.

B4H WA have a well-established charity/business, which collects, processes and transports several thousand donated bikes each year. Each shipment into Africa also supplies a shipping container which becomes a bicycle workshop for the host community. While its primary operation is a workshop facility in Midvale, this is complemented by Rotary Club run workshops in Geraldton and Esperance, and the Showgrounds Community Men’s Shed in Claremont.

The Charity is managed by a 5-person Board and a very active Management Sub-Committee (MSC) made up of eight people, including the Chair, Operations Coordinator, Secretary, WHS&E Supervisor, Administration Manager, Events Manager, WA Regional Projects Coordinator (currently vacant) and one general committee member. The Chair of the MSC also sits on the Board.

There are key ingredients to the success of B4H WA:

  • Ensure a steady supply of incoming donated bikes;
  • Recruiting and managing volunteers, both to prepare and load bikes for transport, and to contribute to behind-the-scenes tasks;
  • Workshop activities, including coordination of corporate volunteer days;
  • Purchase of containers, organising and funding shipping and land transport;
  • Fundraising (Corporate Sponsorships and private) including oversight of Grant applications;
  • Managing social media, newsletter publication and general promotion etc., including attendance at the Africa DownUnder Conference and the Hyde Park Festival.
  • Promotion to Government and politicians at Local, State and Federal levels.
  • Partner liaison and due diligence

The MSC has general responsibility for the day-to-day operations of B4H WA, and the Chair’s role is to lead and guide the committee in accordance with Board direction. As the Chair of the MSC you will be required to:

Attend five Board meetings, plus an AGM each year;

Provide regular liaison with the various bicycle collection organisations;

Ensure workshop operations are conducted in a safe and effective manner;

Support the business planning around the annual shipping schedule and associated costings/budget;

Liaise with project partners, through:

  • Collection of Due Diligence data for new overseas partners;
  • Preparation and execution of project MOUs;
  • Securing project feedback and measuring and reporting project success.

When required, be the lead spokesperson at corporate events, with the media and other support organisations.

Ideally you will:

  • Have experience leading a volunteer or membership-based not-for-profit;
  • Be retired or semi-retired and have the time and energy to support these activities;
  • Bring a well-established network of contacts from the philanthropy sector, Australian mining companies operating in Africa and/or the transport and logistics sector.
  • Have experience driving teams and a safety culture in a mechanical workshop environment;
  • Have prior experience at Board level in either a corporate or not-for-profit organisation.
