Your impact

As Principal Legal Counsel, Projects, you will be the lead legal partner supporting Newmont’s major projects portfolio across APAC, serving as the primary point of contact for project-related legal matters. You will provide strategic and practical legal guidance that enables successful project delivery while managing contractual, commercial, and legal risks across some of Newmont’s most significant growth and capital projects.

As part of our team, you will

  • Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of complex project and construction agreements, including EPC/EPCM, engineering, consulting, supply, logistics, and services contracts as well as collaborate with local / regional legal colleagues from time to time.
  • Provide legal advice and project support from early-stage studies and feasibility through execution, commissioning, and project closeout.
  • Partner closely with project, procurement, commercial, engineering, finance, and operational teams to support critical project objectives across the APAC region.
  • Advise on contract strategy, claims management, dispute avoidance, performance issues, and risk mitigation initiatives.
  • Act as the primary legal point of contact for APAC projects, while collaborating and influencing stakeholders across regional and global teams.
  • Influence and build strong relationships across multiple functions and regions to drive project outcomes in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Support the development of consistent contracting frameworks, governance standards, and legal best practices across Newmont’s global projects portfolio.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB), or equivalent law degree, with admission to practice law in Australia or another relevant APAC jurisdiction.
  • Senior post-qualification legal experience supporting projects, construction, infrastructure, mining, energy, or similar capital-intensive industries.
  • Proven experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating complex EPC, EPCM, engineering, construction, or project-related contracts.
  • Strong knowledge of contract law, risk allocation, claims management, and large project delivery frameworks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage a high-volume workload, and coordinate stakeholders across multiple projects and jurisdictions.
  • Strong relationship-building and influencing skills, with the ability to achieve results through collaboration rather than direct authority.

Your work environment

This is a permanent, hybrid position supporting Newmont’s APAC Projects portfolio, including major projects and studies across Australia and Papua New Guinea. Preferred locations include Perth, Brisbane, or Melbourne, although other Australian locations may be considered for exceptional candidates. You will join a newly established global projects legal function focused on supporting complex capital projects, managing legal risk, and creating a consistent approach to contracting and project delivery across Newmont worldwide.
