Data Scientist
Defence Australia
The Role
As an APS 5 Data Scientist within the AI Modelling and Engineering Directorate of the Defence AI Centre (DAIC), you will work with stakeholders across Defence to deliver practical, technically informed outcomes. You will apply your technical skills to support AI prototype development, provide technical advice, and contribute to the testing and evaluation of AI enabled systems. You will also work closely with the Strategy, Policy and Engagement Directorate within the DAIC, providing technical input to inform the design and delivery of Defence AI policy, governance and strategy.
The role offers an opportunity to help shape Defence’s approach to AI. You will support the development of standards, design patterns, platforms and architectures that enable effective Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) and provide clear line of sight across technology readiness levels — from applied research and proof of concept through to deployment.
You will be expected to build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, communicate confidently with diverse audiences, and justify your advice using sound technical judgement.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to outcomes that enhance Defence’s decision superiority and information advantage.
