Our Tier 1 Mining Client is looking for an experienced Senior Protection Engineer to join a high-performing engineering team delivering one of Australia's largest renewable energy and high-voltage transmission programs.
Roster: 5/2 Perth based
Start date: ASAP
Duration: approx. 12 months - depending on client requirements
Pay Rate: $80.00 p/h + Super depending on experience

The Role
Working across a portfolio of large-scale infrastructure projects, you'll play a key role in the design, configuration, testing and commissioning of protection systems for new 220kV and 33kV substations, renewable generation assets and battery energy storage systems. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the delivery of critical energy infrastructure supporting Australia's clean energy future.
Reporting to the Protection & Controls Lead, you will be responsible for the design, configuration and commissioning support of high-voltage protection systems while collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering and project delivery teams.
Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
- Design and review HV protection systems for transmission and substation projects.
- Develop protection settings, relay configuration files and functional design specifications (FDS).
- Perform protection coordination studies and review protection philosophies.
- Lead Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and support commissioning activities.
- Verify relay settings and protection schemes prior to energisation.
- Support IEC 61850 communications, including MMS and GOOSE messaging.
- Review drawings, technical specifications and engineering documentation.
- Provide technical advice during project execution and commissioning.
- Work closely with engineering, construction and operations teams to deliver safe, reliable outcomes.
Required Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in electrical protection engineering within the power utility, transmission or renewable energy sector.
- Strong experience with HV substations (220kV/132kV/66kV/33kV preferred).
- Experience with Siemens SIPROTEC 5 and/or SEL protection relays.
- Demonstrated experience developing relay settings and configuration files.
- Knowledge of protection coordination, grading studies and fault analysis.
- Experience supporting FAT, SAT and commissioning activities.
- Sound understanding of Australian electrical standards.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to travel occasionally to project sites as required.
