Defence Sustainment Engineer
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Work Arrangement: Hybrid (Tuesday-Thursday in office)
About The Role
World Fuel Government Solutions is seeking a Defence Sustainment Engineer to support the maintenance, reliability, supportability, and lifecycle management of complex Defence systems and equipment.
This role is ideal for a mechanically-minded engineer who enjoys understanding how equipment is built, maintained, supported, and improved throughout its operational lifecycle.
We are particularly interested in engineers with experience supporting, maintaining, improving, or managing complex assets and equipment within Defence or related industries such as Rail, Marine, Oil & Gas, Utilities, Manufacturing, Heavy Industry, Mining, Transportation, or Asset Management environments.
Working within our Defence Engineering team, you will contribute to the sustainment and long-term support of complex systems through activities including maintenance planning, asset management, reliability improvement, engineering investigations, lifecycle management, and supportability engineering.
Unlike larger Defence organisations where engineers are often limited to a single discipline, this role provides broad exposure across sustainment engineering, reliability, maintenance, supportability, lifecycle management, systems engineering, configuration management, and Defence support programs. You will work closely with experienced engineers, Defence customers, suppliers, and project teams while developing a broad understanding of how Defence capability is designed, maintained, and supported throughout its service life.
This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer looking to broaden their experience, solve practical engineering problems, work on complex physical assets, and build a long-term career within Defence engineering and sustainment.
What You'll Be Doing
- Support sustainment and lifecycle engineering activities across Defence programs.
- Contribute to maintenance planning and asset management activities.
- Assist with reliability, maintainability, and supportability engineering tasks.
- Support investigations into equipment performance, failures, and maintenance-related issues.
- Participate in root cause analysis and problem-solving activities involving complex mechanical systems.
- Develop and maintain engineering documentation, maintenance records, technical data, and supportability information.
- Support engineering change and configuration management activities.
- Assist with development of maintenance concepts, support strategies, and lifecycle planning.
- Support preparation of technical publications, operating instructions, and maintenance documentation.
- Work closely with Systems Engineers, suppliers, project teams, and Defence stakeholders.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, reliability, maintainability, and operational performance.
What We're Looking For
Required Qualifications
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related engineering discipline.

- Maintenance Engineering
- Asset Management
- Reliability Engineering
- Sustainment Engineering
- Supportability Engineering
- Lifecycle Engineering
- Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
- Understanding of engineering fundamentals, asset lifecycle management, maintenance principles, and reliability concepts.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

- Working with mechanical equipment, rotating machinery, transportation systems, mobile assets, plant equipment, or industrial facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience within Defence, Aerospace, Rail, Marine, Oil & Gas, Utilities, Manufacturing, Mining, or other highly regulated industries.
- Exposure to Defence sustainment programs, Integrated Product Support (IPS), Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), or other asset support and lifecycle management activities.
- Experience participating in engineering investigations, reliability studies, or failure analysis activities.
- Exposure to maintenance planning, supportability assessments, or asset lifecycle planning.
- Exposure to engineering change processes or configuration-controlled environments.
